ADVOCATING FOR PROGRESSIVE
POLICY INSTEAD OF PROHIBITION.

Banning smoke-free alternatives does not eliminate their demand – it simply pushes them into the shadows slows-down the decrease of smoking rates by cancelling a validated lifeline. It’s time for a better approach.

About the platform

Prohibition Does Not Work is a platform dedicated to advocating for progressive policy that empowers smokers and oppose prohibition of smoke-free products.

Smoke-free products contribute to accelerating the reduction of smoking rates in an increasing number of countries worldwide. Banning them does not eliminate their demand – it simply pushes them into the shadows; but it does reverse public health milestones, so it’s time for a better approach.

Our partners are non-government, non-partisan, non-profit organisations and leading experts on prohibition and public health.

FAQs

Find answers to frequently asked questions about our platform and initiatives.

Which areas do you cover?

We advocate for progressive policy that empowers smokers to move and stay away from smoking. Banning smoke-free products, including de facto bans, does not eliminate their demand – it simply pushes them to black markets where quality, safety, and access cannot be controlled. Banning smoke-free products also slows-down the reduction of smoking rates by cancelling a validated lifeline, so it’s time for a better approach.

What is progressive policy?

Progressive policy is policy that empowers smokers to move and stay away from smoking. Countries like Sweden, the UK, New Zealand, Japan, have witnessed a reduction in smoking rates more significant than the global trend. This is the outcome of progressive policy that does not cancel a validated lifeline such as smoke-free products.
